Prostate Cancer Charter for Action slams Wales brachytherapy u-turn

The Prostate Cancer Charter for Action has condemned a decision by Health Commission Wales not to offer brachytherapy as a treatment option for men with prostate cancer, despite previous announcing that it would be available.

Learning more about the Prostate Cancer Research Collaboratives(15 August 2006)
The Prostate Cancer Charter for Action is to host a briefing session with two research experts, at the forefront of the UK's fight against prostate cancer.
The briefing session will take place at 4-6pm on Wednesday 18 October in Dining Room B of the House of Commons, London.
This will be a great opportunity for those with an interest in prostate cancer to:- Find out more about how the Government's funding for research into prostate cancer is being spent
- Learn more about ground-breaking research being undertaken in the UK and how it might be applied in practice
- Hear about the Research Collaboratives' plans to develop their research programmes
Professor David Neal and Professor Colin Cooper, who head the North and South NCRI Prostate Cancer Collaboratives respectively, will lead the afternoon and there will be a unique opportunity to ask questions about progress being made within prostate cancer research.

Best Healthcare Policy Campaign - Speak Out on Prostate Cancer(17 July 2006)
The Prostate Cancer Charter for Action were the proud winners of Best Healthcare Policy Campaign at this year's Communiqué awards, recognising best practice in healthcare PR and medical education.
The Charter's Speak Out on Prostate Cancer campaign was described as "an extraordinary, stand-alone campaign and in a taboo area" by judges and the campaign was commended for "directly driving policy change".
The Speak Out on Prostate Cancer campaign encouraged Parliamentarians, from the Prime Minister down, to raise awareness of the disease.

Speak out on prostate cancer; shortlisted for Excellence Award

The Prostate Cancer Charter for Action's Speak Out On Prostate Cancer campaign was shortlisted in the public affairs category of the annual CIPR Excellence Awards.
The award, given to a campaign designed to inform the public policy agenda or influence the legislative programme, recognised the imaginative nature of our campaign, encouraging Parliamentarians to raise awareness of a major killer by Speaking Out on prostate cancer.
At the launch of the Prostate Cancer Charter for Action's second charter, over 250 parliamentarians registered their support for our campaign. MPs and Peers recorded the world's first Audio Day Motion, following the trend set by three party leaders, Charles Kennedy, Michael Howard and Tony Blair, who united to Speak Out on prostate cancer.

Victory on brachytherapy services in Wales

Health Commission Wales has announced that it will be taking steps to develop brachytherapy services in Wales, ensuring that patients have access to this important treatment choice. The move follows campaigning work by the Charter and some of its signatories.

Charter campaigns for access to brachytherapy for patients in Wales

The Prostate Cancer Charter for Action is campaigning for access to brachytherapy services for patients in Wales. This follows a decision to suspend access to brachytherapy pending a review by Health Commission Wales.

Minister marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Week

To mark Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, the Cancer Minister, Rosie Winterton, joined with some of the signatories of the Prostate Cancer Charter for Action to visit the research laboratories of the Institute for Cancer Research, a charter signatory. The Minister was able to see vital research projects in action and understand the importance of continued funding for research into prostate cancer.

A key Charter call was met with the launch of UK Prostate Link, the independent gateway to quality-assessed information about prostate cancer. UK Prostate Link is jointly funded by the Department of Health and Charter signatories.
Funding boost for prostate cancer
(31 October 2005)
At the launch of the Prostate Cancer Charter for Action’s second set of calls, the Cancer Minister, Rosie Winterton, announced Department of Health funding for a pilot public awareness programme for Prostate Cancer. The pilot, 2/3 funded by the Department of Health and 1/3 funded by signatories of the Prostate Cancer Charter for Action, will raise awareness of the prostate and its function.
